How Much Does a Private Pilot License Cost in Philadelphia? (2026)
Isaac Prestwich, CFII · October 18, 2026

Short answer: at Merlin Flight Training, a private pilot certificate typically costs about $16,600 to $21,400 all in. Where you land in that range depends mostly on how many hours you need and how much you spend on equipment. Here's every line item, so you can see where the money goes.
Rates as of October 2026: airplane $185 an hour, instruction $75 an hour.
The FAA minimum vs. what people actually fly
The FAA minimum for a private pilot certificate under Part 61 is 40 hours of flight time, including at least 20 hours with an instructor and 10 hours solo (14 CFR 61.109). The private pilot requirements checklist breaks down what those hours must include. Most students need more than the minimum. Training once a week takes longer than training two or three times a week, because part of each lesson goes to re-learning what you forgot.
So we budget for 55 to 65 flight hours, not 40. If you finish sooner, you spend less.
The itemized estimate
| Item | How it's figured | 55 hours | 65 hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airplane rental (N159G) | hours × $185 | $10,175 | $12,025 |
| Flight instruction | 54 / 63 hrs × $75 | $4,050 | $4,725 |
| Ground school | Merlin evening course | $800 | $800 |
| FAA knowledge (written) test | Testing center fee | $175 | $175 |
| FAA medical exam | Set by the doctor (AME) | $100 | $200 |
| Checkride | Set by the examiner (DPE) | $1,000 | $1,500 |
| Headset | Budget to premium | $250 | $1,100 |
| iPad + ForeFlight | Optional | $0 | $739 |
| Logbook, plotter, E6B, kneeboard | Basic kit | $75 | $150 |
| Total | $16,625 | $21,414 |
Why are the instruction hours what they are? About 10 to 13 of your flight hours are solo, with no instructor charge. But your instructor also bills for the briefing before each flight and the debrief after it. Across Merlin's billed lessons, instructor time averages about 1.2 times the dual flight time, and that's what the estimate uses.
The medical, the examiner and your gear are paid to other people, so we show them as ranges. Everything Merlin itself charges is the hourly rate above.
How you pay
You don't pay the whole estimate up front. Training is prepaid in blocks, starting with a 10-hour block for $2,600 (10 hours of airplane plus instructor at $260 an hour). Lessons come off your balance, and you top up when it runs low. How to pay for flight training covers the details.
You can also apply for Klarna financing at checkout. Payment options through Klarna are subject to approval and aren't available in every state. Klarna decides the plan, and we never see your approved amount.
Ways to spend less
- Fly two or three times a week. Consistency saves more money than anything else.
- Study before you come. Show up knowing the lesson plan and you spend less airplane time learning things you could have read at home.
- Pass the written test early. The flight lessons click faster when the theory is already done.
- Buy a mid-range headset. You don't need a $1,100 headset on day one.
- Ask about weather days. A scrubbed flight can become a ground lesson, so the day still moves you forward.
Questions
Is the discovery flight included? The discovery flight is $249 on its own. If you buy a 10-hour block up front, the discovery flight is free.
Are there hidden fees? No. The examiner and the medical doctor set their own fees, which is why those lines are ranges. Everything else is the hourly rate.
How long will it take? It depends on how often you fly, the weather and your schedule. The private pilot timeline and our post on accelerated vs part-time training walk through realistic paces.
